I've never had any problems with Access and PHP, here's a connection method I have used in the past:

if (!$conn = new COM('ADODB.Connection'))
    exit("Error creating ADODB connection<br>");

$db = '\Directory\DataBase.mdb';

$conn->Open("DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; DBQ=$db");
//$conn->open("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=$db");

Adding to the previous post, PHP and MS Access aren't really a "nice" pair and should NOT be used on a high traffic site. PHP and MS Access are good for prototyping, quick solutions and clients that are familiar with Acess.
PHP and MySQL are much better for high traffic, enterprise level applications.
