Default capture a variable from url. .com?jblp

I would like to capture a variable to give a person credit for referring another to the site.
I am thinking ... myurl.com?usernumber
how would I capture this variable to write it to the database when a new user registers for the site?

Take a look at this post it got me out of the problem when I wanted to track links from another site.
