Default rich text editor

many of u've seen editors like i m using when i m posting this thread; rich ( html ) text editor.
there is a complex JavaScript(s) working behind.
can someone give me idea to write such scripts myself.
I've seen such editors with smileys support and instant preview feature also.
i think we've to deal with cross-browser issues also.
this is a P2Psmiley

Do you want BBCode or a full-blown WYSIWYG?

Try this one:
http://xinha.python-hosting.com/

Or this one:
http://www.fckeditor.net/

Xinha is a fork of HTMLArea, and it works in Gecko browsers and Explorer. There are pretty good example files provided with it, so it should be relatively easy to figure out.

Last time I used FCKEditor, it wasn't as good as HTMLArea, still pretty buggy, but it's a decent alternative.

I wouldn't try writing one yourself, but if you're determined to write one yourself I'd start by looking at a few already made ones like those above.

As far as platform development you'll need to look at MSHTML in Explorer and Midas in Mozilla, these are the technologies that make WYSIWYG editors possible in the respective browsers.

Rich

This is off-topic for this PHP forum, by-the-way. This question should be posed in the JavaScript forum.
