Default HTTP Status Codes only

Can some one tell a way to get HTTP status code for a URI?

I used Snoopy (source: SourceForge.net) tool to collect all URLs in an array. But querying each one fsockopen() collects all Web page data and slows down the script tremendously.

What's correct way?

I thought get_headers; but it's only in PHP 5.
