I'm looking for someone who can point me the wright direction.

I'm programming a registration system in vb.net, can anybody help me on how magnetic stripe readers/writers work. I'll need to get user information to check if a user has clearance to some of the screens and to follow up actions made by every user.

Can I program this within VB.net (how do i connect) how can i retrieve the data on the card, or do i need to use an existing program that writes user info to some dbase or text file to where i can read from within vb.net to retrieve the info.

any help are direction to look for my answer will help.

You'll have to look at the manual or documentation for the reader. Without knowing what the reader requires for an interface we can't help you. Most likely you'll be able to program what you need in .net.
