count in expression

I have a filed named [Action Required]. I want to write an exrpression the returns a count of the number of times the entry starts with a particular letter. Can this be done. I could not get a count to work with a like statement.

Select count(*) from table where col1 like 'B%' (or whatever letter you want to use)
