Default Limiting Document Versions

It just occured to me that each version of a document in SharePoint is a separate file that is approx. the same size as the original file. This is a problem since we're fast approaching the limit of our SQL server storage.

Document versions are very important to us so turning off versioning is not an option. Have said that, is there a way to limit the number of document versions in SharePpint? For example, can I keep the latest 25 versions and delete away older ones?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Hi dasani20oz,

There isn't any way that I know of inside of Sharepoint. I've currently been using Avepoint for backup but I heard that they have come out with an archiver that can do this. I think it is able to set the number of versions to keep on SP, how many to archive, and then when to delete them from the archive if I remember correctly.

You probably want to check out their site and look more into it to be sure. http://www.avepoint.com Hope this helps!
