Upgrading WSS 2.0 to MOSS

Hello all,

I'm very new to SharePoint and we just got a project that involves SharePoint.
There are two possibilities:
1) The client already has a SharePoint system set up using WSS 2.0. With the new requirements I recommended him to upgrade to MOSS. I know I have to upgrade to WSS 3.0 before upgrade it to MOSS. According to what I have read, it's not an easy task to do, specially upgrading from WSS 3.0 to MOSS. There are lots of manual configurations that need to be done.

The other possibility will be to install MOSS in a new server and then migrate all the data over to the new system. Is this something that can be done? If so, can you point me on the right direction on how I can do this.
