Default Timeout Expired Error

hi all,

I had developed a software for a client details are as above.

Basically this software runs over 2 systems. One machine works as server and has good configuration.

users have always used both machines for working over software and they have never faced any kind of problem earlier. Since Last 2 days, suddenly it has started to trouble. If we do something over server machine, the client machine gets stuck and after some time shows timeout expired error. QueryTimeOut is already set to zero (unlimited). If on server, even we open notepad also, it does give this error.

I did ping both pc with each other but, it was perfectly fine, both are responding each-other very well.

Background:

Client machine : Celeron 850, 128mb ram, 10mb/s lan card
Operating system: Windows 98, only used for software provided by us

Server Machine: P3, 2 gigahertz mb ram, 10mb/s lan card
Operating system: Windows 98, only used for software provided by us.

Considerable Things: Database size is grown up somewhere around 500-600 mb.

Huge transactions everyday.

I could not understand the problem. If it is the problem with database then it should have started troubling far back, this problem started suddenly.

I cleared logs, Shrinked Database, everything is done which can be done from a developer’s point of view. But nothing could work.

Any solution?

SQL Server 7 Desktop edition or SQL 2000 Personal edition?
How does it behave when you query the database from the SERVER itself?
Has that system got all latest windows security patches applied?
Scanned for any virus?

Finally, did you try a reboot of the server atleast?

Cheers!

it Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000)
it does the same thing while query fired from Query Analyser also.
I restarted server several times during trial n error.
About virus, I did not scan for it. I'll try that option also.

One more thing, I thought this problem is of SQL Server itself. The reason is, The sql server agent does not start.
even I have posted a topic on this issue also that is : http://p2p.wrox.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15575

The long file shows something

Line 1 : SQLServerAgent Starting under windows 9x
Line 2 : SQL Server Error: 18456 Login Failed for user 'SA' [Sql State-28000]
Line 3 : Unable to connect to server '(local)'; SqlServerAgent Cannot start.
Line 4 : SqlServerAgent Terminated (Normally)

(here I have specified line nos in order to show the sequence other wise it show date and time in front)

waiting for reply

Vijay,
Do you feel it is happening just because virus?
or do you have any doubt or any this kind of experience?

Virus may be one of the causes. Just trying to narrow it down. I haven't experienced this so far. Were you able to find anything in the SQL server logs that could give us some clue on this problem to move further?
