In the Query Analyzer

-- Create a logical backup device for the full database backup
USE master
EXEC sp_addumpdevice 'disk', 'networkdevice',
   '\\servername\sharename\path\filename.ext'

-- Back up the full MyDB database.

BACKUP DATABASE MyDB TO networkdevice

I am not sure what you have meant by external storage on your post, assuming it is a shared network drive

Servername is the machinename you wanted to save your backup files on your windows network, backup and SQLdB are the folders on that server

\\BackUpServerName\backup\SQLDB\filename.BAK

Please make sure that account under which SQL server is running MUST have permissions on that network folder (you might want to run your SQL server service under Windows network domain administrator account)

if in doubt check the Books Online (which is installed when you install your SQL Server)
