Default Record saving slowly

I have a table in which saving a record OCCASIONALLY takes over a minute. Normally new records save immediately but once or twice a day during this past week we get this slow save event. Because I use an access project to interact with the database I get a timeout error after 30 seconds. Once this occurs the users always get a timeout until I add a record manually to the table via enterprise manager and it successfully saves after a minute or two. After that the records are able to save normally without any problems until the next time a slow save event occurs. The table is very small (only a few hundred records) and the server is not under any sort of significant load. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's going on here???
