Default Alert types -- performance condition

Hoping someone can help.

I'm trying to set a performance condition alert on a database to dump the transaction log file. However when I attempt to set up a new alert, the dropdown for "SQL Server performance condition alert" does not appear.

I have this type of alert built on other servers here and, checking through them, it seems very hit or miss as to which servers have that option in the dropdown and which do not.

Curious, first of all, how to get this to return so that I can use it on this specific server, and second of all, what makes it appear on some servers and not appear on others.

Thank you!

What OS are you running on? What version of SQL? What SP? What edition?
At a Dos prompt type ver and paste the results here. Then open Query Analyzer run SELECT @@Version and paste the results here. Then you may also want to check your Application Event log to see if you are getting some Perflib errors, which may indicate that the SQL Server Performance Library counters are goofed up.

It is a SQL Server 2000 sp3 server (8.00.760) running on Windows NT 5.2. The server has multiple instances built on it and there is an actual difference between instances as to what types show up in the drop down box when you go to establish a new alert.

I did peruse the logs, but I have no way to pin down what the timeframe could be that this occurred in, and our logs get quite large.

My boss has seen this and fixed it before, however neither of us can recall what he remembers as a quite easy fix.

Thoughts?

Thank you!
