Default Cannot connect to MSDE

I am trying to add an MSDE 2000 data source to a SharePoint Catalogue. The data connection is requesting a server name, but does not seem to recognize either my machine name or the "(local)" name. I am using Windoes Authentication.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Allan

I'm having the same problem. I am trying to convert an access database to a sql server database. I installed MSDE, ran the command line to setup MSDE with a sapwd but now i can't find the sql server instance from either the command line osql tool or the Access upsizing tool. I tried both my machinename\MSDE and (local) without any luck. Have you found an answer for this problem yet?
