Default I need help with SQL

Hi, I have bought Riveira's book as I want to learn and master to some degree his book. But as you know it is more than 1400 pages thick and it would be appropriate to read as a novel. Has anyone got idea on how to make the most of this book?

Also to go with it I got SQL 2000 for developers. but whenever I try to open a new project using English query it says that I need Visual InterDev. What can I do without spending another $400 at least?

Mr Peej
