Default Inconsistent connection to SQL Server 2K5

I am connecting inconsistently to my SQL Server 2K5 running on the server on our domain.
I have run the Surface Area Configuration and enabled TCP/IP and named pipes.
I have changed the connection timeouts, as well.
I still get error 26. It is not consistent - my system administrator and I are going crazy (and it wasn't a long trip for either of us.:))

Does any one have any ideas? I think I've searched google, msdn, ask.com, etc. I'm not coming up with any new ideas that we haven't already tried.
The server is at 9.0.3054. I believe I am current with all updates.

Please HELP!

Does it just say error 26 or it says something more. If so how about posting the complete error here?

Well,
I would love to give you the entire message, but the next time I went to login, of course, it worked and it has been working ever since ...

So, for now, I'll do a happy dance.

Thanks,
Karen

Okay,
it's happening again!

Cannot connect to APC-SRV01\APCP1
...
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)

I didn't include the 'extra stuff' about the default settings not allowing remote connections.

Please HELP!
Thanks,
Karen
