Default functions on different computers

Hi
Can anyone explain to me why certain functions in Access work on some computers and not on others. I have a laptop and a desktop computer both with the same version MS Office professional installed. I created a database on my laptop (which has now gone in for repairs) and now when I try and use it on my desktop I get errors all over my database. Some very basic function like "Left" dont work.
This makes me very nervous because I am going to be installing the database on a couple of different clients computers.
Anyone know?
Liz
