How to Read and Receive data from a port

Hai
i am doing a new project in vb.
my problem is,
system is connected with a electronic balance which sends data
to the system through a port. i don't know how to receive data
from the port and also to read. i want to send data to the
electronic balance also.

can anybody help me?

Probibly the best place to start is with the sample code in VB (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\MSDN98\98VS\1033\SAMPLES\VB98) and look at the Mscomm project. Using this sample, you can get to know the mscomm control a little better.

Another place is in Richard Grier's book "Serial Comunications 4" from www.hardandsoftware.com. It extensively covers this subject and has some samples included. I believe one of them is working with scales.
