As I understand it, the dataset has a Tables collection. The tables colection has a Columns collection. Elements in these collections can be referenced by a string or an ordinal.

So:
Code:
    ds.Tables("TblCars").Columns("Year")
or
    ds.Tables(0).Columns(3)
