Default Spurious Exclamation Marks

I generate HTML emails from several pages on the website. On some of the emails, a spurious exclamation mark (!) is being inserted as in this example:

RESPONSES TO N! ON-STANDARD CRITERIA OPTIONS:

They appear in no particular place, sometimes at the beginning of a line, sometimes in the middle of a word. There is no consistent pattern. I have retyped all the relevant lines to ensure I have no hidden characters, and there is nothing in the code to indicate that they will appear.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and/or know the cause or cure?

Thanks
Pat
