Hi,
I would like to know, when my application first runs up on someones computer how i can assess what files the user wants to be associated with my application. So when sed user double clicks this associated file my application springs to life and does what i want it to do.

Along with this file association get my specified icon to be associated with it.

Now please don't;
- Tell me to search on google because thats not helpful!
- Tell me its to do with registry and leave it there
- Tell me anything like the above

It is not an easy subject, at the moment i believe its a myth or dark kept trade secret!

Please give me a worked example with plenty of explanations of what and when and where etc.

Well it's not a myth, it's to do with the registry.

I search on google for "Creating File Associations visual basic" and this was the first result, which gives you a worked example as a good starting point:
