Default VS2008 Locks up and cannot be killed in TM

Visual Studio is occasionally locking up on me when I stop a web application after encountering an error. Task Manager shows VS (Administrator) "Not Running" but no matter how many times I click End Task, it continues to run. As far as I can tell it never returns; I gave up after 10 minutes and rebooted the system. The VS screen looks sort of "greyed out" and the VISTA "clocking" cursor is shown.

Can somebody explain why it should do this and what I can do to prevent it?
