Programmatic Access to JPG File Properties
Hi there,
I am trying to find a way to access embedded information from a JPG file. I am examining images taken from a digital camera, and need to access the date the picture was taken.
I know this is somehow possible, because Windows Server 2003 is capable of showing a column with "Date Picture Taken".
This date is different from the NTFS / FAT property DateCreated / Last Modified. If I open the JPG image in Notepad for example, I can see the date, and the camera model for example. Apparently, you can store additional information in a JPG file.
Suggestions on how to access this data are more than welcome. It doesn't necessarily have to be a .NET solution. Other technologies are OK too.
Cheers and thanks in advance.

I have been looking for this myself. Well, I have been wondering how to do it for the photo album app I've been working on. Here's one thing I found...

Googling with "metadata" seemed to help with positive hits.

Cool, thanks for this, Peter. I think the metadata did the trick. I had been searching for "properties, programmatic access" and terms like that.
It looks like this is exactly what I need. Maybe I'll try to convert it to VB / .NET, may be not (it's quite a lot of code).
Meow meow.... ;)

If you don't feel like converting it right away, give me some time. I'm planning on converting it into some nice little .net classes. I already have some ideas percolating in my little brain.
(I got "metadata" from ACDSee. Of course, their use of that term is incorrect, but I thought it might result in a useful search.)

You may have already checked it out, but the ASP solution you pointed me to is partly based on another Open Source Exif reader, written in VB 6: http://sourceforge.net/projects/exifclass/
I tested it briefly and it works pretty good.
Please let me know if and when you have a .NET version, or need some help.
Cheers,
Imar
