Default Word has no Fonts

This is not VB, but hopefully I can get an answer ayway.

I just got a WinXP Home machine, and loaded Office 97.

The font lists in Wordpad and Excel show the full list, but the drop-down in Word has 3 entries: Device Font 10cpi, Device Font 12cpi and Device Font 17cpi.

How does Word look for fonts? How can I link it up with the fonts that are present in my Windows\Fonts folder, and which are located by other programs?

Default

Apparently everyone is stumped.

I finally found the cause. I had not installed any entries in Start>Printers. Consequently, Word would not know how exactly to render the image on the screen. (Apparently not a problem for Excel nor WordPad...)

Added an HP printer in the Printers folder (don't actually have one, but why not?) which made all the fonts show in the font drop-down.
