Default Word Fields - Synchronizing with Sharepoint

Is there a way (besides using a macro and without using some kind of preview step, such as print preview or reading layout) to dynamically update fields in Word that correspond with a field on Sharepoint in a document library? I have inserted fields that are directly related to a Sharepoint document library column but the only way the fields will update is with some kind of preview or a macro. I have approximately 650 documents that would be utilizing this functionality. Is there something just as simple as a check box? I'm working 100% from the Sharepoint application only. Thank you very much in advance. Have a great day.

I have been looking to do something similar -- and have been searching for code snippets that will populate drop-down menus in Word with data derived from a SharePoint list.

Have you had any luck?
