Default xsl:param and xsl:apply-templates' "select"

Is it possible to do something like this...

<xsl:param name="filter">items/item</xsl:param>
<xsl:apply-templates select="$filter" />

basically I am trying to pass an XPath expression in a parameter and have apply-templates use that XPath.

Default

It's only possible if your processor provides an extension such as dyn:evaluate(), saxon:evaluate(), etc.
