using tomcat as an application server

i am a noob to tomcat..just started reading a p2p book for fun.
i have tomcat6-apache2 on ubuntu 8.04
how do i know whether i am using tomcat as a standalone or application server ?
whatever i do, there seems to be no interfernce/dependence from the apache side...doess that mean i am using it in a standalone mode ?
what should i do to integrate it with apache ?
