Default Deleting Temp File: Tomcat

What are some of the recommendations around deleting/cleaning up files present inside temp dir on Tomcat. The files are images created by charting packages, numerous files created by various applications. I would appreciate if anyone provide recommendations around best practices related to this - whether i should be looking at HttpSession Listener, Servlet Request Listener, cleaning up on startup, some sort of Spring based solution etc.
