SmartNavigation and Screen Flicker

I have a datalist that lists name of departments. Each department name is a hyperlink. When clicking the hyperlinks, due to PostBack, and screen redraw, the screen flickers. I tried SmartNavigation, but it didn't work. Can anyone tell me what ASP.NET designers are doing with this problem? Also, any suggestions on good Web page design books?

This really looks horrible, and if anyone could tell me how they overcome this problem.
