Default {x} in ASPX

Good morning,

Quick question, what do the curly brackets in ASPX represent? I have noticed them peppered throughout various code snippets and can not make heads or tails as to what they represent. Thanks in advance.

Ex: String.Format("/dir/default.aspx?cat_id={0}, strDir)
    -or-
    String.Format("{0}/dir/default.aspx?cat_id={1}", Request.ApplicationPath, strDir)

Please diregard, I figured out that they represent placeholders for the variables part of the String.Format command.
