Default How to have a breadcrumb track pure history?

Hello and thanks for taking a moment. I have a breadcrumb that is bound to a Web.sitemap xml file in my 2.0 web app. My question is, is there anyway to get the breadcrumb to ignore the file structure heirarchy in the xml file and track a pure history of where the user has been. Meaning if I put links to a file that is a child, but not a child of the page the user is currently on, is there a way to still show the user where he/she has just came from once they click that link. (This as opposed showing the parent of the file the user arrives at, which is not historically accurate.) There is a lot of info on breadcrumbs out there but any info about where in particular to look would be of great help. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
