Default Problem with DB Publishing Wizard

Hello,

I have been trying to complete the exercise on pp 658-9, but when running the DB Publishing Wizard, I keep getting the following error message roughly halfway through the process:

Operation is not valid due to the current state of the project.

No SQL script file is ever generated.

Did some Googling first and based on one thread, installed SP1 for SQL Server 2008 Mgmt Studio Express. Still stuck.

Please help.....

Thanks, Eddie

Hi there,

Are you using SQL Server 2005 or 2008? The book assumes 2005, but it looks like you're using 2008?

Have you seen this thread: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/For...4-d6cc9542b1ff

It talks about creating multiple smaller files instead of one big file.

Also, this article suggests you run the wizard twice; once for the structure and once for the data: http://blogs.devsource.com/devlife/c...ps_tables.html

It looks like a bug in SQL Server so you probably should contact Microsoft support if you can't make this work.

Cheers,

Imar

BTW: you're better off posting book related questions in its own forum located here: http://p2p.wrox.com/book-beginning-a...0-18759-3-389/

Makes it easier for everyone to find on-topic stuff.

Cheers,

Imar

Hi Imar,

Sorry, I thought I had posted under the book thread. Yesterday was *not* a good day with me and anything Micro$oft.....

To answer your other questions, yes I tried splitting up into smaller scripts and got everything except tables to work. So then I tried splitting tables to schema and data....got the error msg. I didn't do anything different with the membership tables, so I don't think I did anything odd.

Yes, this was VWD 2008's DB Publishing Wizard, and I do have SQL 2008. But I did try selecting all 3 version options in the wizard (2000, 2005, 2008).

So now I'm just trying to get at least the table schemas. There was only one user account - my own. So I can always recreate that and give myself admin rights again if I have to.

Funny you should bring up M$ support...they just told me I had to re-install Vista when my home laptop quit doing Windows Update.

~ thanks, Eddie

That specifies the target format for the extracted data.

I've seen other reports of people having problems running the wizard against SQL Server 2008 as the source database. If that's the case, it's a bug and Microsoft's support should be able to either confirm it, or help you out with it.

Wish I could help, but these kind of issues are difficult to do remotely.

Oh, BTW: if you're only interested in the aspnet_* tables, views and so on (for the application services), you can also use the tool aspnet_regsql that helps you setting up a new database for the ASP.NET application services. Check out the section called "Configuring Your Database for the Application Services" in Appendix B of the book.

Cheers,

Imar

I'll definitely try Appendix B first. The less I have to deal with Microsoft, the better.
