Video format playable on Mobile device

We are creating a Mobile Application that would play videos. As most of the smart phones donot upport flash files (flv) but they all play youtube vidoes.
Do need to know whats the format youtube videos are? and whats the codec required to play them.
Any reply with code would be of great help.
