Default can't see header.php in directory

I am working my way through the tutorials in the wiley book Beginning PHP Apache, MySQL web development and have created the header.php file
as in chapter 2 page 66. The application works and picks up the header.php file and the file appears when I do a folder listing in windows but does not appear in the directory listing for localhost in my browser. Files named head.php, heade.php, aheader.php all appear but not header.php. This is not a problem in that the application works but I am curious to know why I can't see it. I am using windows xp pro sp2, ie6, firefox, php 4.3.10, apache 2.0.52. I have tried clearing my cache, restarted apache and rebooted by pc. Is the name header.php reserved in some way ? Has anyone any ideas?
Thanks
Steve
