Default parent child presentation

I have been following the php, apache, mysql web development closely and am building a skeleton page (ch 4-7 ?) and doing a complete javascript validation before moving to the first switch/$_POST['step'] that branches to one of three states. the first state is selecting a resource (child) to add to the order(parent). when the drop down list box is populated and the submit button is pressed i want to end up at the same screen with a child record being present.

being an absolute newbie to web programming i am unsure how to develop code where I can incrementally add child details and remain at (what appears to be) the same parent screen. I hope I have been clear in expressing my developmental needs.

thanks in advance.
