Default Chat Server - Does not work

Hi,

The Chat Server project does not work.......I set up the start page, it asks me for my email address as required and logs me in ok.........when i try to add a message and click send it give me the following debug error

Failed to update database "C:\INETPUB\WWWROOT\CHATSERVER\APP_DATA\CHATSERVER DB.MDF" because the database is read-only.

Once I am logged in and in a chat room......it hear a clicking sound like it is trying to submit the page over and over again

Hi there,

Did you use the installer with IIS or the manual setup??

If you use the installer, you may need to change the security settings for the database folder (App_Data). Follow the instructions from chapter 5 - Wrox CMS, page 163 and onwards.

The account that IIS uses needs permissions to write to the database. The instructions on page 163 explain what steps you need to carry out to do this.

Also, make sure that the .MDF file does not have a read-only attribute in Windows. (Right-click the file in a Windows Explorer and choose Properties).

HtH,

Imar

I believe the other post regarding the MDF file being changed from Read Only should resolve the asp.net error.

The clicking sound is actually correct, since the chat interface uses Callbacks in asp.net 2.0, it is calling the xmlHttpPost on the browser in javascript in the background, so that the page does not need to refresh or reload.

Hi Imar and Shawn,

I used the installer with IIS.

I did change the security settings for the database folder (App_Data). I Followed the instructions from chapter 5 - Wrox CMS, page 163 and onwards.

I did give the machine account permissions to the app_folder, the only thing i didn't do is add the userfile folder as it does not exist.

I made sure the .MDF file does not have a read-only attribute in Windows.

And does it work now? Or is it still not working?

Did you try opening the site through VWD? Does it work then?

And can you describe a bit about your setup? (E.g. OS, folder settings, what version of SQL Server you're using etc)?

Can you try it again with the CMS site?

The other error in the Chat Server may have a different cause. I am working with Shawn to figure this one out. Will keep you posted....

Have you confirmed that things work fine when you create a brand new web site, add a CreateUserWizard control on a page, then run the site and create an account?

That would cause the creation of a new aspnetdb.mdf file in the App_Code folder which is then attached at run-time. That way, you can see if the basic concepts for VWD and a SQL Server Express database works on your machine.

Please note: I am not asking these questions to distract you. I am trying to find out why things don't work on your machine. I tested the projects on a number of machines, here at my home office, at the office and on a number of other machines, and never had a problem.

So, it has to be a combination of the site, the database, your setup and the security settings on your machine. Trying to get at the bottom of this, bit it's hard for me to see what's going on without knowing exactly how your machine is set up, what works and what doesn't.... ;)
