pinch - looks like a compilation error. perhaps something's been changed and the site hasn't been run since (i.e. one of the server components etc)

This is roughly a couple weeks since I noticed the site was down. Is this a normal occurrence? I tried to infer the author's e-mail address from his blog so that I could inform him of the problem but couldn't find it.

Sorry, Marco's actually had to take that demo site completely offline because of robots creating fake accounts. It overloaded the database. It has been that way a while and will be until he adds captcha to the account creation. I don't know that he has any plans to put the demo site back up any time soon.

jminatel - funnily enough, this was the one 'weakeness' that i highlighted yesterday looking at TBH arcitecture was the ability to 'flood' post. of course, captcha and other remedies (a cached hashtable of ip addresses and times of posting) would help too. i'd personally go for a few 'under the covers' protections as well as perhaps a 'random' captcha on posting (i.e. maybe every 50th post for example) per user. the idea of captcha for every post would just be offputting for a load of folks. of course, if you're referring to account creation, then obviously captcha plus email validation is the way to go.

I think he's looking at captcha at the account creation stage. I don't think it was too many posts that overloaded the server but literally millions on junk accounts.
FYI, for the next edition of the book and next iteration of TheBeerHouse, captcha is one of the improvements he's adding. :)

jminatel - any idea when the 'slated' release for the next edition is?? thinking out loud, i think it'd be useful to have a little poll/suggestion list from some of the users here regarding things they'd like to see in a next version (i do appreciate that this may be somewhat at odds with the freestlye writing of the book) or alternatively alternatives to the way that v2 achieved some of it's goals.

It's an ASP.NET 3.5 book, slated for sometime a few months after ASP.NET 3.5 is officially released. As far as polls and suggestions, I did comb through (almost<g>) every post as of Sept 1 this year and give Marco an exhaustive list of the site ideas from current users. I don't want to give away too much publicly here in the forum because there are at least a couple of other publishers I know of still trying to mimic Marco's approach in clone books of their own and I don't want to make it too easy for them to have a head start. But as Marco gets more done and closer to publication, I will let more details out before the book publishes.
