kherrerab - just realised what you were meaning by 'quick reply' window (i.e the one i typed this message into :)) - that would be a nice ergonomic addition. (must make sure not to post any messages after the 3rd beer!!)

One thing...

If the content forum is good, people came into forum, register and if they have any doubt they will post their comments!
This don't depend so much from the forum design...
If it's good content, people came over and over again to read/reply new content...

Newsletters it's very important!
If the administrator send a newsletter withe the 5 most viewd topics/articles etc the members will return!

But the design is very important, I hate TBH design!

The first think that i had made was delete all css files! And make a new one without start from wrong!
My forum has a design identical to phpbb/yafnet/etc

Polls for post it's necessary!
Think about users from the kerrerab site, that dream to post a post with their photoCars and open one thread:

Which car do you prefer? A, B, C or D...

I think polls it's crucial!
As PM, NewMessages, Statics.

Users like to return to the forum and see with different images wich are the new posts and old posts... I never saw any forum that doesn't have that! (only ThePhile and TBH)

I will!

But I don't conclude this yet...

But remind that I changed hardly some aspxPages features!

But some of you could still be inspired!

Maxxim,

I agree with you that polls should be integrated into any forum. I'm going to await and see what my users think would be useful technology for the forum (I'm expecting "everything vB offers"). Perhaps that can help us out so we can see what features we would like to add ourselves?

A poll shouldn't be too hard really, as we have a poll control. Database-wise the adaption would be quite easy. The UI would be a differet story though.

In the meantime, I have checked out the datamodel for the InstantASP forums. Perhaps something similar can serve us too while we look into and expand the existing forums?

Cheers,

Peter

I almost did the polls stuff!

The hard thing is UI like you said!

For example, i have some people complains with: "All forums polls have a limit of pollOptions!
So my polls will be "infinite"

I started to make a gridview, and everytime a user wants to add a pollCoice he add a item GridItem!

But this force a new postback everytime a user wants to adda a new PollOption!

At the end, when user click in "submit Poll" my codebehind" read all gridview item and save it to bd!

When a user want to read a topic there are two options:
If post.pollID = 0 there are no poll
If post.pollID = > 0 there are one poll so... retrieve this poll from forum!

This is very easy!

My problem is UI!

If you have some ideas please tell me!

Maybe some javascript code for adding a new input box for new pollChoices and at the end read all this imputs and add Poll to BD!

It's possible to do this in Javascript?
I just don't want to make postbacks for each pollChoice!

I'd say the user will have to get used to not having an infinite number of choices. And if it's postbacks you want to avoid, you can always try precreating the maximum amount of options (say 10). Any poll with more than 10 options is not a proper poll anymore, since the ability to substract useful data from it is small.

Think about it, whenever you have partaken in a survey, when have you seen polls with more than 10 options? If the user *really* thinks he needs more options, he can always create the 9 most useful options, call number 10 "Other... (please explain below)".

You can always just hard-code ten options, and upon the user hitting submit, you just loop through the textboxes to see which ones have been filled, and only pump the required fields to the database.

It might be an ugly solution, but I really think giving a user an n amount of options is a bad idea.

Hello Peter, I don't agree!

I think it's not bad if a user can have the possibility to add more than 10 pollChoices...
I am the administrator, and If i see there are a silly pool I simply delete it!

I'll give you an example:
My site it's about dogs! If I(or other user) wants to add a Poll about: "Which DogFood do you give to your PET?"
Here in Portugal, there are more than 10 good possibilities!
If I use 9 + "others" i'll be unjust!

I want to make some photo dogs competition... And i don't want to limit the number of participation!

Perhaps noboby places more than 10 choices but I don't want to make a limit = 10 and cut my legs with it!

But suppose that with want add "infinites" textBox to your aspx... How do you do it without postback?
