Hi there,

Before SQL Server 2000, you could only install 1 SQL Server on one physical server. You would connect to that machine using the network name of the physical server. As of version 2000, you can install multiple versions (of SQL 2000) at the same time.

To distinguish between the installed versions, the concept of a Named Instance was introduced. The naming of the installations has the format of Servername\InstanceName. So, in your example, Charul is the name of the server, and NetSDK is the name of the SQL Server instance (most likely a MSDE installation). This way, the .NET SDK installation can safely install a new version of SQL Server, without the risk of corrupting any other SQL Server instance you may have had.
