1. I am unable to change the id for the dropdownlist to 1stpreferred theme
(Property Value is Not valid) so i changed it to firstpreffered theme.

2.After finishing the page 226-227 try out, I am unable to switch the theme.
Can you tell me the probable mistakes?

Did you check the errata before you posted here? http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTit...Cd-ERRATA.html

It's not 1stFavoriteLanguage with a 1 as in First, but lstFavoriteLanguage with an l as in List.

Difficult to say without more information. Do you get an error? If so, which one? What is the behavior you're seeing? Does the page post back? If not, did you set AutoPostBack on the DropDownList to true? I can only help you if you provide enough relevant information....
