Hi again Imar. Just a bit of advice really. Ive been working through your book carefully and am on chapter 10 at present. I am learning this book as I am making a small project as part of my dissertation using a language i wasnt familiar with ie c#.

I plan to make a student online bookshop where students can come and exchange and sell and buy old books. Ideally i would like to include some kind of forum. I want to get this started as soon as possible.

Would your advice be to go right through to the end of the book to have the ability to do such a project or are any of the latter chapters not necessarily needed before i can begin such a project??

I think you want to follow the chapters as they deal with databases / user management / security / personalization / profiles and more; topics you definitely need for a forum.

Building a forum is not an easy task; you may want to look into existing (open source) systems instead.....

Ive sent it to your email also but if its easier to here then. I was getting the "smtp server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated" error and tried following the article you showed previously by adding a port number and a few tips it gave but it still doesnt work.

Hello all,
I am also reading this book cover to cover and am working all Try Outs. So far it has been smooth but for a few hiccups which are not life threatening. It is an excellent book and walks especially Beginners (as the name says) step by step as well with a lot of explanation -which some people may like and some not. However for a Beginner I think it is necessary. While reading it does you quite a bit whether or not you retain and it seeps in depends on how much it is applied and the practice you put in and lot of experimentation. Only after a while can rather volumnous information such as this be put in proper perpective and the various items connected into a coherent whole with each other.Hopefully I get to that point. Else it is like taking a course at college and forgetting all about it the next semester.

I agree. Books like mine can only help you get started, but you need real, hands-on practice to master it. If you want to continue learning this stuff, it's usually a good idea to have a project you can work on, and use to try out new stuff. I initially learned .NET by building my own web site, which I continue to use to try out new technologies and concepts.
