Default error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication'
Hi Imar,

So far I applied all the Try it out's in the book but now working on the chapter 16 - Try It Out—Creating a Profile.

I got the following error:

It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.
his error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. C:\BegASPNET\Site\web.config 139

I searched online all over the place but couldn't get rid of it.
My site was working correctly until I reached this point. Can you please help me.

Hi Tarig,

Can you post the code for the web.config file? Make sure you change sensitive data such as your mail settings before you post here.

Ah, I see. Take a look at this:

You should add the profile and roleManager elements directly under the main <system.web> node, not as a child of the Management <location>.

Imar,

The problem when I put the <location> inside the <system.web> it complains that location can not be a child of system.web and of course I cannot have another system.web element to post the profile inside it.

Can you post the structure of the way this section should look?

You should leave the location element as-is, but only move the profile and roleManager elements under the main system.web element.

But since the system.web is a child of location how can I put the profile and roleManager directly under it without being under the location.

system.web with all children falls within location.

Search the code you posted for system.web and you'll see there's another one at the top, directly below the connction strings. That's the one you need.

The other one is a child of a <location> element used to override specific system.web sections that apply to the page or folder specified by the location element only.
