IMO, Ultimate is a very useful version of VS, and the more you can learn about it, the better. But more importantly: most likely 80 or 90 percent of what the book talks about runs fine on Pro or maybe even on the free Express. I haven't read the book (since it's not out), but I am pretty sure it will say something that in order to follow along with all examples, you need ultimate, but that many of the examples don't require it.
And on top of that: you can download a free 90-day trial of Ultimate. Combine that with free trials of Windows in a Virtual PC or Hyper V and you can study as long as you want in the biggest VS SKU without anything.

I am not bashing it. I haven't used it or read it so I haven't formulated an opinion on whether it is a good of a bad book. I just noticed that it said in the introduction that it required you to have Visual Studio Ultimate. Which if that is the case, then it is best if you were to find a book that could teach maybe the same advanced level material without having to install or buy Visual Studio Ultimate as a requirement.

I'm working on getting a more definite answer on the Visual Studio Ultimate issue but I think someone misread the intro. The Wrox Professional ASP.NET 4 in C# and VB book into says that you can do almost everything in the book in Notepad if you're so inclined (you are just editing text files) but that do do things the easy way you'll want to install Visual Studio 2010.
I don't find anything in the book stating a VS Ultimate requirement. The only things I could think of that might would be some performance and testing issues but those are more covered in our Visual Studio ALM book. I'm checking with everyone on the 4.5 book now to see if anything new in it requires Ultimate.
And yes, the ASP.NET 4.5 version is delayed. We're working quickly to have it shipping at the end of April and maybe beat the currently "official" schedule.

First off, thanks for posting. We love to hear feedback regarding the books. The Professional ASP.NET 4.5 in C# and VB book does not require you to have Visual Studio Professional or Visual Studio Ultimate. However, there may be some material that covers a tool that is only available in the higher SKUs. For the most part, you should be able to use Visual Studio 2012 Express for Web. In fact, one of the chapters that I took part in uses ASP.NET Web Matrix which is a free download. We hope if you read the book you consider writing a review!
Thanks,
Jason

If the delay is in the printing/distribution process, any chance of setting it up so orders can be placed and the ebook distributed, with the printed copy to follow? Or will there be an ebook version only? I only noticed the printed/ebook combo when I looked recently.

The delay is just that it's a BIG book that takes a lot of time to update. This new author team has done a great job on that front though and we probably just scheduled a little too aggressively on the back end. The ebook should be available here at Wrox.com a couple of weeks before the printed book but not much. We're still doing final proofing and QC on all forms of the books. I'll be sure to post here when the ebook is ready.

Question will your new advanced book have an application that you can put together similar to what Imar has done with his book? That would be nice if it did!

I've bounced this off of the other authors and they concur.

The reason I asked is that it was posted on this blog board that the book wouldn't be released until later April early May. But now you say that it is released? I am confused. I am really not sure what everybody is talking about here.
