I am trying to make my own banner for my own site. I have no experience in this. I seen some online editors but nto sure about them. Allready spent over 2 hours messing wiht differen tthings as i realzie pics get stretched and look awful. So what is a good method for me to create my own images and banners. Microsoft photoshop. IS that the answer?

You could take a look at Paint .NET, a free image editor: http://www.getpaint.net/

Photoshop is pretty expensive and I usually find Paint .NET easier to work with and more light weight. Depending on your needs (and skills) you may also want to look at drawing tools such as Adobe Illustrator or Fireworks.
