Thanks Joakeim. I think you have sold me. I will probably get "Beginning ASP.NET 4.5.1".

Don't write off "Beginning ASP.NET for Visual Studio 2015" completely. It is just not for beginners, at least not in my opinion. When you have completed Beg ASP.NET 4.5.1 and if you have Beg ASP.NET for VS2015 give it a read. It will be easier to follow plus you'll see the differences between the 2 frameworks (Web forms and MVC).

I give credit to mr. Penberthy for trying to explain both at once. When I first read the description for the book I was so hyped. I still am but now I say this could be written a lot better (both in explaining and especially in exercises) and in more pages = more info. Still I would recommend this book after someone have read a more "beginner" one.

Quick tip (maybe not for beginners): if you plan to create a production site it is better not to use .NET Framework 4.5.1. If I had a bit more time I would redo all exercises in Beg ASP.NET 4.5.1 in .NET Framework 4.6.1. I'm pretty sure they still work since there aren't any breaking changes between the 2 versions.

Hi Joakeim, Thanks very much for your suggestions. I am a beginner so this may be a very stupid question but I know I saw in a tutorial that in VS 2015, you can convert files to a newer version of ASP.NET. If I do the exercises in the 4.5.1 book, can I convert the downloadable code to 4.6.1 and then use it since you mention it is better to create a site with 4.6.1 or does it not work that way?

You can convert a project with many ways.

1. Right click your 4.5.1 project go to Property Pages and from there pick the Target Framework you want.

2. If I remember correctly there is an element in web.config that allows you to do the same.

Of course if you code the exercises yourself you can always create a project to target 4.6.1 from the start.

If we weren't talking about beginner stuff I would suggest checking the breaking changes in MSDN to see if you can upgrade your app in a newer .NET version.

Thanks again Joakeim, you have been very helpful to all us beginners! I too am going to move to the Beginning ASP.NET 4.5.1 in C# and VB for now. I have a school project due at the end of term and can't afford to waste time figuring out errors as much as I usually enjoy that and appreciate the learning opportunity. I will have to keep the Beginning ASP.NET for Visual Studio 2015 since I already started writing in corrections so no refund for me. But as you suggest, it may be useful later.
