Default Dreamweaver MX and PWS+ME

Hi Imar!

This time I am not writing to report any error but just to tell that I have finally finished the soccer site from your book Dreamweaver MX.

This posting is especially for all the people there who have Windows ME and are probably wondering whether using PWS on Windows ME is possible or not and to make them aware of the problems they might face if they are using this combination.

I want all to know that I am also using PWS on ME, which, by Microsoft’s documentation, is not compatible.

(See reference -)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1

But with some minor adjustments and patches it can be installed properly. I installed it according to the following article:

http://billsway.com/notes_public/PWS_WinMe.txt

After I started creating the Soccer site, I faced a few problems –
1. PWS+ME combination creates application variable names in UPPER CASE.
2. Sometimes the records added to the database were not reflected in the site. However after closing Dreamweaver and then adding the records to both local version of database AND the remote version of the database, this problem was solved.

3. I also had one weird problem in inserting the Record Insertion Form. (Chapter 14, Try-it-out: Adding the Insertion Form). In step 10 in this Try-it-out, after pressing the Menu Properties button, the Menu properties dialog opens. In this dialog, as soon as I click the radio button ‘From Database’, I had following error and the system hanged:

While executing onClick in insert record, the following Javascript errors occurred:
At line 909 of file C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX\Configuration\Shared\Common\Scripts\ListControl Class.js”: exception throw in native function

The solution was to save the page before adding the Record Insertion Form, closing Dreamweaver, and rebooting the computer. Then everything worked fine.

The *same* error occurred in Record Update Form, and the same solution worked.

May be you could throw some light on why this happens.

4. On the Events page, if I click on “Select a Category”, instead of choosing any particular category, it shows no records, whereas it should show *all* the records in the database according to the book. But if I choose any other option, everything works fine.

Apart from these minor glitches, everything worked fine and the site is functioning fully and properly.

So those of you, who are stuck with ME, don’t lose hope. PWS does work with ME and it’s good for educational purpose.

I must say this book is really good for getting the practical experience in developing web sites.

Thanks Imar, for all the help and support you gave me throughout the development of this site. Now I will be starting the third site in your book and hope that PWS+ME does not create any problem there.

Thanks again.

Shubhada.

Hi Shubhada,

Thanks a lot for posting this. I am sure other people using Windows ME and PWS will appreciate this. Including the links for the setup and your personal findings will surely help them getting things up and running!

As to your last problem, can you post the code? Does the same problem occur with the version from the code download? Did you change the dynamic DW variable to the column name?

I am really glad you like the book. With all the general PWS problems solved, you shouldn't have much problems with the final part of the book. That part uses the same techniques (PWS, ASP, etc), except for the language. It uses server-side JavaScript instead of VBScript, but that should work equally well.

Cheers,

Imar

Hi Imar!

As soon as I posted it, I found that I had not changed the dynamic DW variable to the column name. After changing it to the column name 'Category', it worked.

But hey, there is another problem waiting to be solved - this time in the MediaEdge site. I have posted it as a separate posting.

Thanks.

Shubhada.
