Default First Image in The Cooking Place

I am a newbie to Dreamweaver MX and I've just started working my way through 'Beginning Dreamweaver MX'.

In chapter 2 on page 67, after inserting the first table in 'The Cooking Place' and inserting topbkg.gif to make the background of the table black I am puzzled as to why when I insert the image topleft.gif into the left-hand cell, the red color from the image 'spills over' into the right-hand cell. I would have thought that the right-hand cell would have remained black.

I'm not sure I've explained this properly so here is the code <td width="50%"><img src="images/topleft.gif" width="290" height="51" /></td>

Thanks for any help.

Not sure what you mean with this and what problem you're having.

Can you link to a screen shot or a page with the full source??

Thanks for your reply Imar.

I'm not sure how to link to a screen shot. Before inserting the image 'topleft.gif', the whole table is black.

The topleft.gif image is an image of the first piece of pizza with a red stripe. After inserting the image in the left cell, the red stripe appears in the right-hand cell too.

It's not a problem as such, as this is how it is shown in the book. I'm just puzzled as to how this is done, as the image is only inserted into the left-hand cell.

I am still not sure I understand, but maybe it's this:

The topbkg.gif image has two colors: its upper halve is black, the lower part is red. When the table is still empty, it doesn't have a large hight, so all you see is the black part.
Then, when you add the image to the first cell, the right-hand cell's height is stretched, showing the lower part (red) of the background image for the table.

Is this what you're seeing?

Yes, thanks Imar, that's exactly what I'm seeing!

The reason for my confusion is that I thought that topbkg.gif was all black. I hadn't realized that it was black and red!

Thanks for your help.
