Default All your Java in jEdit :o) :o) :o)

I just started with Java 2 for beginners, but this gave me a lot of trouble:

1. MS-Dos really puts you off as an environment to work in.
2. JBuilder is not suitable for beginners (true what Ivor says).
3. The procedure for setting my Classpath in Windows ME-NL is a CRIME

As I had already been doing 200 HTML pages in the Notepad editor, I wanted something else to write my Java in...
I downLoaded the jEdit teksteditor, and I think it is great (even without the plug-ins). It's free and it is written in Java. It is suitable for any programming language, also HTML. I recommend it!

I have got it all going for me now, and am studying the book. Suddenly the MS-DOS window looks real helpful, because of its simplicity. And the JDK (or SDK as Sun calls it) is a wonderful tool, because it tells you just what is wrong with your program: automatic debugging!

My question would be: I bought the previous print of Ivor Horton's book (for 10 Euro), does it lack something essential?
I am worried I would miss the new chapter on XML.

Kind Greetings

Huh? Nobody but me?

> I am worried I would miss the new chapter on XML.

You might want to visit the Sun Java-XML-Webservices congress of 8 October on Amsterdam Airport. They have some free lectures on just the topics you are interested in.

At least I am going, to see what you geeX are like!

Bye bye!

Dear Forum,

We (the book and me) are doing fine, steadily working from chapter to chapter, typing in the examples in Jedit, doing the exercises.

BOOK ERRATA: the setX method in chapter 5 is void, so should not contain a return statement.

> ..see what you geeX are like!
You Geeks have become salesmen?

I am still figuring out the exact commands you need in the MS-DOS Window(s ME) to compile and address Java PACKAGES. Especially the JAR utility, which must provide easy program exchange, does not seem to work for me. Any suggestions?

By George - it is a book! And a landmark achievement in education it must be, presenting sophisticated object oriented programming jargon to catch some kindergarten nonsense problem about animals.
And I like the Java Buddhas too - should I meditate to prevent me from going bananas inbetween chapters? -

Hi All,

I too have installed JEdit and it's awesome! but take care...i kinda drift into setting the PLAFs and waste time in that instead of studying the work at hand...

ANyway, it's a great editor and someday i think i'll write my own PLAF for it... a small way of giving back something.

Have a great day,
Kaizer.

You could just install the bare jEdit without the JAVA plugins, and still have a great text editor. jEdit is specially suited for typing in JAVA code, as such it isn't a development environment, but it surely is a great improvement over the Notepad, bof!!
