Hi mollick2,

I am quite new as well with XP. I can only think of a couple of things top of mind -

did you enable all of the items that you need to in php.ini?
did you change the config file for apache?
have you checked the services menu to see if mysql is running as a service or if you can start from there?
you have to create an initial db for mysql I believe before you can do anything, did you do this?

Did you download and install Xampp - it has built in start / stop MySql. Also - search for the folder - you might see a start / stop MySql executable.
