After creating page layouts with SPD 2010 according to instructions in the book in Chapter 4, I get a javascript error upon clicking the edit button in the ribbon.
Pub is undefined sp.ribbon.js
This occurs using v4.master and a custom master page.
What am I missing?

You wrote that you are using a custom master page as well as v4.master. Please switch to using an unmodified version of v4.master and trying again. If the error persists do the following to identify where the error is coming from:

1. In Internet Explorer(IE), press F12 to open the developer tool
2. Go the error line
