Default I need help with Code

In Chapter one when I go to wrtie the code for the "try it out" section it doesn't come out right. I save my file as as miles.html, I then close out the program I am using to write in. I then go and open it back up and hope it looks like they show in the book, but it does not come out write. What happens is at the top of the screen there are rows and rows of letters and numbers and what not and then in the middle there is some of what I had writen about Miled Davis and then at the bottom of the page there is the rows and rows of letters and numbers and what not again. What I am trying to write can be found on page 23-25 in the book.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Can you post a link to the page? It would be easier if we could see it.

I'm not sure how to post a link, but here is a quick example.

On page 32 the book has the code as follows;

<p>The following description of XHTML is taken from the W3C Web site: </p>
<blockquote>XHTML 1.0 is the W3C’s first recommendation for XHTML, following on from earlier work on HTML 4.01, HTML 4.0, HTML 3.2 and HTML 2.0. </blockquote>

I save the file as blockquote2.html in word. The book then tells me to open the file in a web browser, which seems like the only thing I can open it in once I save the file as a .html. So, then I open the file in IE and it looks like the following;

When I copied and pasted this there was about a hundred rows of the letter Y too.

Any help would be great

It looks like you used a word processor to make a web page with. That wont work.

Use a text editor like notepad or Editpadlite. There are others out there equally as good.

Why don't work processors work ? They have hidden text, things like printer and font information.

They is where that crud on your web page comes from.

I hope you are still around to read this.

Good luck !

Yep, Jimjoe is right. You really, really, really don't want to use a wordprocessor like MS Word to type out your HTML. What happens is even if you pick html as your extension the word processors often default back to .txt instead of taking the .html even when you specify that. I have no idea why, but it does. If you're using Windows there should be a program called Notepad. On Mac I believe it's called TextEdit. I downloaded a text editor called TextPad and I really like it. Makes keeping track of your code visually much easier and it's free.

At any rate, don't use your wordprocessor. You'll have no hair left otherwise. :)
